Why do so many girls like "hard," "urban" "ghetto" types?

I have so many friends who date ghetto type of guys. I mean guys who have tattoos all over their bodies, wear loose clothes, and do little to get ahead. Recently a friend of mine was cheated on by her ghetto boyfriend and I tried to hook her up with my bf's friend and she called the guy a nerd. My boyfriend is a doctor and knows this friend from school. This guy dresses well, makes more money than 95% of the population and is well mannered. I notice though that it is not just my friend, but a lot of women want to be with the thuggish looking kind of guy. Why?
